The St. Joseph and Francis Xavier Adult Choir is a soprano, alto, tenor, bass mixed ensemble that provides music every Sunday at either the 9:30 am mass at St. Francis Xavier Church, or the 10:30 am mass at St. Joseph Church. The parish choir sings a broad range of repertoire including chant, western classical, gospel and contemporary sacred music. While having previous musical training is encouraged, all voice types and abilities are welcome to join. Members include all ages from high school through seniors. Under the direction of Jonathan Metzinger, John Hopkins and Al Engram, choir members develop expertise and a love for the complex rhythms and harmonies that characterize both traditional classical anthems as well as today's Gospel music genre. Al and our St. Joseph music director John Hopkins have been working together for over 35 years. Al grew up at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, recognized by the Illinois State Historical Society as the birthplace of gospel music. He has brought that love of gospel music to our choir and they have enthusiastically embraced both the rich traditional gospel style as well as contemporary Christian music. Jonathan's extensive background in both chant and classical music provides our choir with the wonderful opportunity to embrace our musical traditions. The choirs usually alternate each week between the two locations. Rehearsals occur one hour before the scheduled mass time. For additional information contact [email protected] or [email protected]. Come make a joyful noise unto the Lord. It's a lot of fun! Schola Cantorum
